NEW 'MUST SEE' BLOG!!!

Hey everyone!

So, fed up with the lack of:

a) Reviews on the accessibility of cafes, restaurants, and public facilities around Auckland,

b) Regular news about NZ disability events, sports, arts festivals, etc.

and c) The distinct lack of any sort of online community for people with disabilities, their friends and family...

I've decided to do something about it!

I've created a blog, walkingisoverrated.com, which is a very early attempt at rectifying the aforementioned lacks. It contains reviews conducted by yours truly on accessible cafes and restaurants around Auckland (only a small number at the moment, but will be adding to it daily), comment on disability-related news and sport clippings, and so much more! It also has a Forums section, where you can start your own discussion on any disability-related issue you like!

If you're interested, I'd love nothing more than to have other people contribute to the site - whether it be a review you'd like to write, news stories you'd like to comment on - anything at all - flick me an email and we'll hook something up!

Also, if you currently run a website yourself, I'd be hugely appreciative if you'd consider putting up a link to my site - I'd be happy to reciprocate.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments, and enjoy the site!

Cheers,

Red Nicholson

DOT WILSON … candidate for Southland District Health Board

Dot is standing again for the SDHB - here is some information that she has provided to us that may help you make your decision on voting day!

Personal profile:

I have a family of three, and am grandmother to six grandchildren.

My life experiences have been shaped by a physical disability, resulting in long relationships with hospital services.

I have worked in the area of advocacy for people with disability, teaching self-advocacy, human rights and motivation, and encouraging people to work together to make changes toward a more inclusive society.

I am an elected member of the Southland District Health Board serving on the Disability Services Advisory Committee and chair to Kaitiaki Hauora, secretary for Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA) Southland, member of National Executive of DPA (NZ), chair to DPA Women’s Caucus, and DPA representative to the Workbridge Council.

I will bring to the DHB my skills, knowledge and experience from a grassroots perspective, identifying with all people but especially disabled people. I believe in supporting, encouraging and empowering all people. I believe in, and support self-advocacy and advocacy on behalf of disabled people.

I will endeavour to ensure that the Southland District Health Board provides inclusive and accessible services, and achieves best practice for all.

The issues I will focus on for the Southland DHB are:

- That Southlanders have the right to healthcare which is inclusive and accessible.
- That Southlanders have the right to know what they are entitled to, and how to access it.
- That all staff receives appropriate values based training from skilled people.
- The bridging of gaps between decision makers and the people of Southland.

Geraldine Woods confirmed DDG - Health & Disability Services

The Director-General of Health Stephen McKernan is pleased to confirm Geraldine Woods as the Deputy Director-General Health and Disability National Services. There was significant interest in the position, both from within the Ministry and from the sector reflecting the general support for our renewed focus on sector success. Geraldine was the stand-out candidate and her appointment reinforces the strong performance and leadership she has shown in both the interim role and her previous roles. Geraldine has held a number of senior Government roles at Health, the NZ Employment Service, Work and Income and the Ministry of Social Development. Geraldine will be responsible for leading the Directorate and assuming responsibility for planning, funding and providing services not currently funded by District Health Boards. A significant part of the Directorate's work will be planning as well as funding and contracting. The directorate will be working with DHBs and other sector agencies to align the provision of those services with local planning and delivery.

Volunteer work recognised

Sally Duston has just been awarded a New Zealand Mountain Safety Lifetime Award. Sally has given Mountain Safety 20 years of service. Sally is also one of our wonderful volunteer DRC Hospital Courtesy van drivers.

People do care

Tiwai Crew 3 Rugby Club have very generously given us $3000 for our DRC Hospital Courtesy Van Service. This unexpected but very welcome donation will help us keep the wheels turning and ensure that people get to their essential hospital appointments. A huge thanks to Boof and the boys!

Where's Trev's Birthday Present?

We celebrated our 15th Birthday on the 10th August. Our volunteer "Statman" Trevor has been with DRC since we began in 1992 and we presented him with a Certificate to show how much we appreciate his hard work. All we need now is a nice new computer for him instead of the ancient one he currently uses - it must surely be the oldest computer still used on a day to day basis in New Zealand! Trevor uses it to compile and collate our statistical data and produces monthly reports on this. It has no Windows, just DOS. It has no mouse, just a keyboard. It doesn't take CD's, just 3 1/2" AND 5 1/4" floppies (remember those?) Of course you can't access the internet on it. Interesting that in all these years it has never let us down, never given us a blue screen, never performed an illegal operation and had to be shut down! However, it would be great if we could get Trevor a nice new computer as we have some better software for him but it won't run on anything less than Windows XP.

Any offers?
